Concept
To create a striking mural, maximising the sense of space, and give a unique allure to a compact café in Nørrebro, Copenhagen. The relief design was inspired by the abstract painting of Spanish modernist artist Joan Miró. The design was to be cut into a wooden panel grid referencing historic panelled interiors.

 

Developed Design
The design was hand-drawn then inputted into CAD software for CNC cutting, as was every side-counter in the space. These were all custom designed to fit the space perfectly. The panels were cut with three different depths of v-shaped router, giving a rich 3D texture to the artwork. The colours were then painted on by hand.

 

The custom-fitted side counters meant that, despite the lack of space, customers were able to sit comfortably in the café. When seated the design encouraged them to view the colourful mural up close - the 3D relief would appear slightly different depending on the position of the beholder.
