Concept
The proposed exterior of the building needed to tie back to the classical origins of the building’s façade and street scene, while looking progressive and sleek. Simplified classical motifs and curved glass were combined to create a modern take on the Georgian shop front, and an inviting entrance to the Apartment-Hotel above: the curved sides to the porch invite you in and shelter you from the rain, while hiding a bin store on the right of it behind a curved folding door.
Proposed Elevation
Existing Elevation
Clare Street In Bristol, was started in 1770 and named after 18th century Bristol MP Lord Clare. It is one of the most central historic streets, and is filled with prospering restaurants and businesses.
Developed Design
The shop front was made in traditional painted hardwood that would weather naturally and be easy to repair and repaint over its long lifetime. The Design had to consolidate the appearance of the irregular existing steel structure and was deigned to accommodate this geometry: with bullnosed window frames and curved glass spanning the existing pillars. The coving was designed bespoke by Clover Studio and cut by a CNC machine to simplify a design seen in Georgian Bristol shop fronts.
The coving was built from milling four unique profiles designed by Clover Studio and cut by a CNC machine to be assembled on site by a Joiner.
